We are London’s independent heritage charity, set up in 1980 by the Greater London Council to rescue historic buildings and monuments. We work in every London borough, supporting local communities who most need our help.
We identify projects, commission condition surveys, give grants and guide the restoration of each site from beginning to end. We focus on heritage at risk. We encourage local authorities to get behind us and work with specialist conservators to bring every building back to life.
London’s lost histories inspire and delight. We research the amazing stories behind every project and use them to brighten our surroundings and our lives.
As a charity we are 100% independently funded – if you can help support us, please do!

Caledonian park animal heads & gates
This handsome iron gateway was built in 1854 as the entrance to London’s newest Metropolitan Cattle Market, where livestock from all over the country were traded. Each pier had cast iron animal heads around its top, with gas lanterns on every third pier.
