Emma Cons Memorial, The Old Vic

Restoration of the Emma Cons Memorial Plaque

Emma Cons (d. 1912) was a Victorian social reformer and philanthropist, whose work included the founding of the South London Dwellings Company and the Working Girls Home in Drury Lane. She turned the Old Vic temporarily into a temperance coffee house and music hall for the poor and founded Morley College for working men and women. She is commemorated on a fine plaque outside the Old Vic, celebrating her generosity of spirit and selflessness. The inscription was severely eroded and illegible.
